Ruby had a life before school. Ruby was born in Tylertown, Mississippi in 1954. In Mississippi she lived on a farm with her grandparents. When she was four she moved to New Orleans, Louisiana but she stayed with her grandparents every summer. In New Orleans she lived on an all-black street called France St. the next street was an all- white St.
Ruby still had to go to kindergarten. Her kindergarten teacher’s name was Mrs. King. Like Ruby and her classmates she was black. Near the end of her kindergarten year all the kindergarteners took a test to see if they could go to all-white school in first grade. Including Ruby there were five girls who were chosen to go to white school. 1 girl declined because her parents thought it was too dangerous. The other girls went to McDonough Elementary School while Ruby went to William Frantz Elementary School alone. The girl’s names were Leona, Tessie, and Gail.
